Home Spa: 6 Kitchen Recipes For Beauty

February 12, 2017

An empty mind is not always a devil’s workshop- In my case, it turned into some kind of a homegrown beauty Lab!

I’ve been spending some time indoors of late and since I didn’t have much to do over the last weekend, I decided to do an inventory check of my kitchen and came up with some really interesting home spa ideas with regular everyday ingredients for hair and beauty. Well, I’m not much of a cook but I promise I can whip up a mean, fizz-fighting hair mask in minutes! Here’s the low-down for 5 home spa recipes for beauty.

1. Hair mask for eliminating frizzy, dry hair and split ends:
What you need:
1. Egg
2. Honey
3. Olive Oil and/or almond oil
4. Mashed Banana
5. Lemon

Beat the egg (I’d use the white and the yoke but if you have a very oily scalp, only use the egg white) and add 2-4 tablespoons of Olive oil and almond oil (depending on the length of your hair). Add 1 tablespoon of honey for an extra boost of moisture but skip it if you don’t like the stickiness. Mash some banana and add to the mix. A few drops of lemon juice will help to diminish the eggy smell but don’t overuse this- just a few drops.

This is a messy concoction but totally worth it.

Coat your hair with this mixture from root to tip and wear a shower cap. I’d keep it on for about 2-3 hours but some like to keep it on overnight, despite the eggy smell (personally, I’d barf if I have it on for that long!).

Rinse your hair thoroughly with lukewarm or room temperature water (never hot water). Use a mild shampoo and conditioner and finish the last rinse with cold water.

Effect: After repeated usage ( twice a week), you’ll see the difference in a month or so – Goodbye frizz, hello beautiful hair!

2. Hair mask and rinse for high shine and super glossy hair:
What you need:
1. Yogurt
2. Honey
3. Olive Oil and Vitamin E oil
4. Apple Cider Vinegar

Add 4 tablespoons of full cream yogurt to 2 tablespoons of a mixture of  olive oil and Vitamin E oil. Mix well and add 1 tablespoon of honey.

Coat your hair with this mixture from root to tip and wear a shower cap. I’d keep it on for about 2-3 hours and wash off with a mild shampoo and conditioner.

For the final rinse, take two tablespoons of Apple Cider Vinegar and dilute it in a cup of water. Let it sit in the hair for about ten minutes and then wash off with a blast of cold water.

Effect: Voila! Super Shiny, glossy, happy hair!

3. Overnight portion for hair growth and silky, soft hair.

What you need:
1. Castor Oil
2. Coconut oil
3. Vitamin E oil

Mix 4 tablespoons of castor oil, 2 tablespoons coconut oil and add 1 tablespoon of vitamin E oil in a bowl and heat the mixture until its hot but comfortable enough to be applied directly onto your scalp. Maintain this proportion but increase the quantity of you have long and thick hair.

Massage the hot oil mix onto the scalp and throughout the length of the hair, till the tips and keep it on overnight. You may wear a shower cap or put a towel on your pillow to avoid leaving oil stains on your pillow.

Wash off in the morning with a mild shampoo. Skip the conditioner, maybe because there may still be some oil leftover and you don’t want to weigh your hair down. Trust me its moisturized and how!

Effect: Extremely silky and soft hair the next morning but be sure to clean out the oil thoroughly or else hair will be soft but also limp.

4. Exfoliating face mask for blackheads and whiteheads
What you need:
1. Baking Soda
2. Water
3. Honey

Mix two tablespoons of baking soda with water and honey until the consistency is paste- like and not runny. 1 tablespoon of honey will work just fine.

Apply to the face in gentle, circular motions, making sure to exfoliate – do not scrub or rub it harshly onto the skin. Be gentle!

Keep the mask on for about 15-20 minutes and rinse off with lukewarm water. Add a splash of cold water to close the pores. Follow up with a moisturizer.

Effect: The first time i used baking soda, I panicked a bit because it was tingling on my skin but it soon settled and dried. When I washed it off, the face was absolutely refreshed, squeaky clean and glowing.
