It’s been a manic October for me, but the highlight had to be the amazing trip to New York City with one of my all-time favorite casual wear brands- Gap. What’s even more exciting is that I have a Middle East- exclusive preview of the Spring Summer 2014 Collection just for readers of Fashionably Yours!
My first impressions of Manhattan were that of awe and amazement – afterall, it’s not called one of the most glamorous places in the world for no reason. Street fashion was all about sleek and chic fall wear, fitted blazers in quirky colors and tweed was seen having a major moment. Oh and if I got a cent for every cute beanie I spotted, I’d be a millionaire by now.
I headed to Spring Studios in Varick, where the preview was to take place and fell in love with the minimalist, white- and- woody brown interiors and the elegant ceiling to floor windows that looked over the city. I think it complemented the collection perfectly, which had that clean and simple, yet very sophisticated aesthetic to it.
We saw Gap’s new creative director, Rebekkah Bay’s vision for the brand translate into the collection, bring out the understated elegance and clean cuts that she’s known for (she was previously the founder of COS, which belongs to H&M). She says, “We made subtle but significant changes to reflect the trends like by having a little dip collar or a turn up cuff for that perfect length – for denim or trousers or even a denim jacket. You then you have the most authentic version and you also have the fashion version. So what you really see here is the take on how you create these little worlds.”
I loved some of the turned up sleeves and trousers that she mentioned- as also the 90s style stone- washed and distressed denim dresses. Some of my other favorites were the printed trousers in a quirky retro print (laundry service sticker!) and some lovely pale pink shorts. The delicate color palette is maintained across accessories as well, with the gorgeous ankle-strap sandals (on top of my wish list for next season) and sling bags.
In all, Gap has a fantastic collection lined up for Spring summer 2014, which I’m waiting to grab as soon as its in stores in Dubai.
