Its a man's world…or is it?

There’s something about a woman in menswear … its not just about her accessories and what she’s wearing, but her unmistakable oomph and attitude. She makes a powerful statement as she dons the avatar of the opposite sex and carries it off with her feminine charm.

The androgynous look has been seen on the runway and in the closets of stylish women from the twentieth century to the present.

Katherine Hepburn in classic menswear

Way back in the 1940s, Katherine Hepburn broke all rules and made the androgynous look famous. At a time when her contemporaries restrained themselves to dresses and skirts, she wore wide legged high-waisted trousers; loose fitting full sleeved classic blouses, teamed up with a form-fitting blazer and loafers to complete the look. She redefined the way women dressed and pulled off this look with the grace and charm of a true style icon.

In 1966, YSL designed the Le Smoking Tuxedo suit for women that revolutionized androgynous fashion for women. It featured a black single-breasted jacket with satin lapels and satin trousers. It also has a shaped waistcoat in ivory silk with a mandarin collar.

This marked the entry of the power suit to the runway and eventually in popular culture. Dior and Armani pant suits also popularized this look.

The following years saw several alterations in the silhouettes as they took the form of short blazers teamed with slim jim pants and slim pant suits.

The androgynous look was spotted all over Spring Summer 2011 runways. High waisted 70s style wide legged trousers are big this season. Wear it with a loose fitting white blouse for day.

This look goes best accessorized with a pair of loafers for day. Put on a pair of high heeled pumps or pointy shoes to up the glam quotient for evening.

Keep the jewellery minimal by wearing just earrings or a string of pearls. A sleek watch also makes a strong statement with a nice pant suit. And keep the bag formal, elegant and fuss free!
