Furne One @DFW 2011: Avant Garde Fashion At Its Best!

25 Oct

After a mildly confusing and somewhat bizarre show by local designer, Amber Feroz ( reactions to the part- Twilight- inspired- vampires- cum- zombies concept went from “Whoa!” to “Whaaa?!”) came another concept show- only this one was wildly awe-inspiring.  After intermittent delays, growing murmur of complaints from guests, Furne One, the local (and hugely popular) Filipino designer’s show, gave Dubai Fashion Week, it’s mojo back.

The AV off the video wall@ Dubai Fashion Week 2011

The Machine yard AV

Oh, and how! It’s a story worth retelling. It started off with an AV of  a metal yard,  with chains and machinery working in motion. Suddenly the pulsating music beats to the tune of “It’s alive! It’s alive!” to introduce the avant-garde designs of the very talented Mr Furne One.

He used fabrics, materials and styling to a futuristic, sci-fi effect, even suggesting that his robotic angles could have come from outer space. Strong, exaggerated shoulders gave that intimidating silhouette to his ensembles, while sheer fabric softened the effect, with shimmer thrown in for good measure. The color palette remained soft, with peach, blush pink, white and wasabi spotted throughout his collection.
This power-play made it the most intriguing show seen yet, at the Dubai Fashion Week.

Well worth the wait for the sleep deprived blogger (ummm moi). The show was a fitting end to the new and improved Dubai Fashion Week, filled with histrionics and drama. Eagerly awaiting next season…Muchos gracias, for all the fun and fashion!

Dubai Fashion Week 2011: Ravi Bajaj

22 Oct

The opening night showed a lot of promise and potential and although I’ve just attended one show so far, I’ll say it has surpassed expectations. However, expectations weren’t too high in the first place! After the unceremonious departure of Indian director and choreographer,  Marc Robinson, thing looked grimmer than the response to shows last season. Imagine, I was all thrilled to be seated in the first row before I realized that the first row was the ONLY row occupied! Well, that was last season. This time,  Simon Locke took stock of the situation and turned the DFW into two smoking barrels of excitement…Okay, that was a really bad pun.

Coming to the Ravi Bajaj show, well, it made me miss home! The rich Indian textiles, use of traditional gota work on lehengas, the elegant anarkali salwar kameez and the ever stylish saree elicited a resounding applause from the audience, which, for a change, was in full attendance. The lavish use of sequins, velvet and net made sure the collection oozed glamour and old-world charm, which is so difficult to replicate.

All in all, a beautiful, shimmering night at the Dubai Fashion Week. However, the buzz in the media pit was that the photographers were groaning about being hungry all day. Helloo! Organizers of the DFW please pay heed… refreshments for the poor guys on their feet, who’ve been shooting all day, would be much appreciated! Shukhran!

This city never pauses, does it? Soon after Bloomingdale’s, comes another night of fabulous fashion, with stilettos, style and Sauvignon Blanc… I caught up with a couple of photographers at the ‘red carpet’ area, amidst all the ‘reuniting after ages’ hugs and squeals- and they swore they had snapped up the same ‘socialites’ at another do that same night!

Meanwhile, the crowd outside was swelling up! More posing, pouting and plastic (not just the smiles, mind you)… Overheard, “Sara! meet Sara!”, “Yalla yalla lets go, the show’s starting!”
