Half Polish, half French, all American! You can call her the unconventional fashion icon, the compelling actress or a symbol of youth rebellion in modern pop culture. Call her what you will, but it’s impossible not to know and love the unstoppable Chloe Sevigny.
Her unorthodox and unique style caught the fashion world off guard, back in her modeling days- She attracted bad press like chocolate muffin does, a chubby kid!
Always the rebel, she started off with shaving her head and selling off her hair to a broadway wigmaker! She experimented with everything from drugs to sexuality as a teenager before being spotted on a street by a fashion editor of Sassy magazine, In 1993. The editor was so impressed by Sevigny’s style that she asked her to intern at the magazine and from that day on, there was no stopping Chloe- Music videos, magazine shoots and then the global fashion ramp followed to create the global celebrity – A tag she struggles to shrug off.
The editor, who is now the creative director of eBay Fashion is quoted saying, ‘‘She was kind of an old soul, a little bit goofy and completely unpretentious. You see a lot of people with great style, but they are boring.’’
It was her unconventional outlook, style and personality that brought her in the limelight even in her years as a model and actress. Marc Jacobs wrote of Sevigny in 2001: “The fashion world is fascinated by her because not only is she talented, young and attractive, she stands out in a sea of often clichéd looking actresses.”
Such was the impression she made on the fashion world that she was promptly labeled the ‘IT Girl’. Off beat in both, her choice of films and her personal style, she loves watching skateboarding stunts on her time off.
She’s a huge fan of vintage clothing, especially from the Victorian era. Despite earning millions of dollars she prefers to shop at three-dollar vintage stores. She loved fashion so much, she even worked as a costume designer for a movie called ‘Dot’ in her younger days.
Some of her biggest campaigns in fashion include H&M, Chloe, MAC apart from ‘Imitation of Christ’, her own label which was kicked off in 2003. Her part nerdy, rebellious and individual style has vowed the fashion world time and again- She’s one of the very few fashion icons of the 90’s to have achieved cult status– “Are you sure you can carry it off ? That’s so Chloe!” is something only she can evoke.
The most ‘unceleb –like celebrity’, Chloe is busy these days with her clothing and skin care labels, now sold in over 100 stores around the world.
“I’m not ashamed to admit it: Fashion is superficial, but I love it.”- Chloe Sevigny
Brutally honest, unpretentious, punk, street, off beat and loving it! That’s exactly why you gotta love Chloe!
